Will Mellor first contestant announced for Strictly Come Dancing 2022

Will Mellor is the first contestant to be announced for Strictly Come Dancing.

The actor, who is 46 played Gaz in the cult Noughties show The sitcom Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps, also appearing on dramas Line Of Duty and Broadchurch.

He joined the Coronation Street cast ITV soap Coronation Street in 2021 as “out-and-out baddie” drugs lord Harvey as well as starring in Hollyoaks in the early years of his professional career.

Other credits include the his police drama No Offence as well as Casualty.This announcement came by BBC Breakfast ahead of the 20th show that will see viewers return to studios in this year. The launch show due to air on the 7th of September.Mellor stated: “I’m honestly so chuffed to be a part of Strictly Come Dancing this year.

“Not lying, I’m completely outside from my normal routine. I’m aware that it’s an enormous challenge, but it’s what life is about.

“This show is my mom’s favorite show, and she’s had an extremely difficult few years so this show for her too. It’s time to get it going!”.

Mellor revealed to the hosts Naga Munchetty as well as Charlie Stayt that Strictly is his mother’s show of choice and that after the passing of his father the year 2020, Mellor wanted to make new memories.

He added: “The training side of it is among the reasons I’m doing this. My attitude completely changed time ago and I decided to begin doing things that scare me, and get out of my comfortable zone. That’s the essence of life.

“And when I received the call from this, I simply declared “yes, I’m going take it on’.

“Also My father in 2020 , and I believed that I’ve had to take my life in my hands and do things, and make new memories, and my attitude changed. That’s kind of one of the reasons.

“It’s my mum’s most loved show, so she’s been extremely difficult over the past few years . So I thought we’d try this …”

Mellor’s father Bill passed away in April 2020 following being diagnosed with cancer just two weeks prior.

Later, he uploaded an Instagram video Instagram declaring that he’d had “the worst week of my life” however the plan was to “remember the good times”.

Mellor claimed that his mother had also lost three other family members, including her brother in 2020 due to Covid and other ailments.

“It is something we can do together, get on the Strictly train together,” the trainer said.

The soap’s star claimed that he sought permission from his children prior to accepting the BBC’s invitation to be on the show.

He added: “I had to tell my children because I needed to inquire whether it was okay. You’ve seen what it’s to be like when you’ve got children.

“My son is now 18 years old, and my daughter is now 14. If they’re going to be horrified, then I am sure I won’t do something because will cause them to shout”Please dad, don’t do that Don’t do it!’

“They are OK. I’m trying to be the best I can.”

Four professional dancers from the industry will be featured in the upcoming season of Strictly. This will create the biggest ever roster of dancers on the show.

The announcement comes after two-time winners Oti Mabuse, and the Aljaz Skorjanec duo announced their retirements.

The final season of Strictly was won by Rose Ayling Ellis along with her partner in crime Giovanni Pernice.
