James Caan, who’s remarkable performance on The Godfather Elf, The Godfatherand The Misery created him into an iconic screen actor and has had his death cause revealed to his coroner Los Angeles County Coroner.

The elderly Caan passed away in the month of March from an attack on the heart and coronary artery disease according to a county report.The family of the actor announced his death earlier in July via the official Twitter account of the actor.“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the tweet reads. “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”


After spending a decade in field, Caan shot to fame in the early 1970s , when he landed back-to-back roles in signature roles. He received an Emmy nomination as the real-life sick with cancer Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo in ABC’s Brian’s Songalongside Billy Dee Williams as his fellow Bears runners Gale Sayers. The heart-breaking tale of the enduring friendship between the NFL’s first roommates of different races was the most watched TV show at the time having an average of 32.9 rating/48 shares and won 5 Emmys with the most notable being Outstanding Single Program – Drama or Comedy.

In an interview in 2011 of the Television Academy Foundation (watch it here) The the Emmy winning Brian’s Song screenwriter William Blinn declared: “Jimmy’s Jimmy. He was always confident and a sense of confidence. Extremely competitive. In the best sense. However, he’s a person who has all the advantages and negatives that you could have.”

Caan continued to make waves with his most famous role as the savage, hotheaded and violent Sonny Corleone, eldest son of Don Corleone (Marlon Brando) for Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. The movie based on the novel by Mario Puzo was awarded an award for the Best Picture Oscar and is one of the most acclaimed films ever made. The death of Caan on screen in the whirlwind of bullets is considered to be among the top films of cinema.
